The written word’s power to inspire positive change is the driving force behind my work at Inspired Magazine. I launched this magazine and website as a way of countering the negativity and hopelessness featuring in mainstream news.
I seek out inspiring individuals across the globe, write their stories in depth, and share them with the world. By writing these stories of kindness, courage and compassion I hope to inspire others to step up and be their best selves. If more of us were living our best lives, imagine the possibilities.
Nature books and articles
The power of the written word has also driven my writing about our fascinating natural world. Surely knowing more about the wonders of our natural environment can only help in their protection. As such, I’ve covered a myriad environmental topics for the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction’s magazine LANDSCOPE (and was the magazine’s coordinating editor for seven years). I’ve authored the books Exploring WA’s natural wonders: national, marine and regional parks; Rediscover Perth Outdoors, a guide to natural recreation areas in and around Perth; Discovering the caves of Western Australia and Kalbarri for the department. And I’ve edited dozens of other books for the department.
I also indulge my love of nature by investigating and writing environmental science stories (often light-hearted and fun) for Scitech’s Particle news site.
In the days before parenthood when I was footloose and fancy free I was also lucky enough to work as a travel journalist. My work has taken me to the far-flung corners of Western Australia and beyond. I have been lucky enough to travel to Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Mauritius, New Zealand and extensively within WA on assignments for publications such as The West Australian, Scoop Traveller and Sunday Times. I like to think I did more than write about hotel rooms and travel experiences but instead opened people’s eyes to new places, new ideas and new ways of seeing our beautiful world.
I’ve also written the Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways Guidebook for the Mid West Development Commission and penned countless articles for publications including Out There, Outback, Australian Geographic, The Geraldton Guardian and more. I also hunt stories in my work as a producer for ABC Radio. And I’m as excited about it today as ever—there’s still so much out there to learn, write about, photograph, and explore.
Through my 25 years as a journalist I’ve come to believe that everyone has a story to tell. It’s just that not all of us know how to tell it. Which is why I’ve developed a course to help people learn the tools, templates and tips they need to uncover, write and share their stories. Visit the Inspired Writing Mentor school here.
Public relations for socially responsible business
Socially responsible organisations who care about their impact on the world need a voice to share their beliefs and promote their work. I work with such organisations to devise public relations plans, pen media releases, develop social media strategies and give them the leg up they need to go forth and be the change they wish to see in the world.
